Planet3DS.de: Dear Mr. Kawata. Thank you for taking the time to talk about the horror action game "Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D". How many people have been working on the 3DS production and what was your task?Kawata-san, Capcom: I worked on this as the producer, and managed the whole production process. It was created in a relatively short period of time, but because of that, we had a lot of people working on this project.
Planet3DS.de: Since "Resident Evil 3", "The Mercenaries" has been an unlockable bonus mode for the main games in the series. Why did you decide to make "The Mercenaries 3D" a stand-alone game instead of, for example, include it into "Resident Evil Revelations"?
Kawata-san: I always thought that “The Mercenaries” was a very engaging game but only people who finished the main campaign were able to play it but I wanted everyone to enjoy this game. There was talk of making it a stand-alone all this time, but we just didn’t have the chance to make it a reality. I am glad it is going to be out and available for everyone.
Planet3DS.de: In which way do you try to enhance the game to make it worthy of a full priced stand-alone game? (Story mode, unlockables, weapons, etc.?)
Kawata-san: Because of the nature of the game, we did not think about adding story to it. We made it so the players can enjoy the action with unique characters. As well as the unlockable elements, taking up the “skill system” has added a lot of depth to the game. There are also 3 difficulties to choose from, providing both accessibility and challenge at the same time.

Planet3DS.de: Judging by the released footage, "The Mercenaries 3D" will feature areas and enemies from the most recent iterations, "Resident Evil 4" and "Resident Evil 5". How many enemy types can we expect and will we see any never before seen adversaries?
Kawata-san: There will be many enemies that move very actively. There might be some unexpected enemies as well. Some enemies are hard to kill so Coop play will be the key.
Planet3DS.de: The cooperative variation of "The Mercenaries" found in "Resident Evil 5" did a great job at improving the highscore oriented gameplay. Can we expect a similar cooperative experience on the 3DS? If so, will there be local or online multiplayer elements and what kind of game modes can we expect?
Kawata-san: Of course you can enjoy the Coop play with players all around the world by connecting to the internet. By teamwork and coop-combo, you can easily surpass single play scores! Some unlockables can be obtained by achieving a higher score so go for it!
Planet3DS.de: Among the usual guns Resident Evil always had some more exotic weaponry like the Plaga Removal Laser from "Resident Evil 4" or the Bow and Arrow in "Resident Evil 5". Are there any special weapons hidden in "The Mercenaries 3D" and which weapon is your personal favorite?
Kawata-san: Well, we have implemented a lot of weapons in this game so try collecting them all Personally, I like rifles but they might be for most advanced players.

Planet3DS.de: A very important aspect about a 3DS game is, of course, the 3D effect. Can you tell us in which way "The Mercenaries 3D" benefits from the 3DS' graphical capabilities?
Kawata-san: Glassless 3D and 3D action on the 3D environment make this game very thrilling to play and experience. Also, Capcom’s proud MT framework mobile fully utilises the graphic potential of Nintendo 3DS, resulting in stunning graphics for a portable console.
Planet3DS.de: Other than "The Mercenaries 3D" there is a second Resident Evil game for the Nintendo 3DS in production "Resident Evil: Revelations". Can you tell our readers how far the development is and what special features they can expect?
Kawata-san: It might take some time to be honest…This time, the amount of script increased significantly and it will be a lot of work. We’ll make it so it will be a real horror experience. Don’t miss it!Planet3DS.de: As soon as all Resident Evil projects are finished, what further ideas or visions do you have regarding Nintendo 3DS developments?
Kawata-san: I am very busy at the moment… but I would like to come up with new ideas before completing the production of Resident Evil: Revelations.
Planet3DS.de: Certainly you are a tough horror fan and used to the scares and shock elements - But what are you really scared of?
Kawata-san: What I am afraid of the most is an earthquake. What human beings can do is very little…
Thanks to Masachika Kawata and Capcom for their kind support.
